The best Y level to find diamonds is anywhere between Y level -53 to -55; I usually find success between those levels while doing the old branch mining method. If you can dig your way around the lava without dying, you can keep exploring for Diamond ores until Y level-59 (before the bedrock layer at Y level -60 to -64).
