If you applied for a Social Security number (SSN), you should receive a Social Security card in about 2 weeks. However, you may want to check your application status after 14 days have passed to see what’s taking so long. While this may tad confusing at first, rest assured that you have plenty of ways to get to the bottom of this. In this article, we’ll walk you through everything you can do to figure out what’s going on with your Social Security number application.

Check your application status by signing into your online account
If you’re a non-citizen, apply for your work permit and Social Security number at the same time by filling out Homeland Security’s (USCIS) form I-765.

You need an employment authorization document (EAD) and a Social Security number to work, but getting each of these documents separately can be time consuming. Luckily, you can apply for both an EAD and SSN on the same document by filling out the Department of Homeland Security’s US Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) form I-765.
