      • A line that "just touches" the circle as it passes by is called a Tangent. A line that cuts the circle at two points is called a Secant. A line segment that goes from one point to another on the circle's circumference is called a Chord.

  1. A segment of a circle is the region that is bounded by an arc and a chord of the circle. Let us recall what is meant by an arc and a chord of the circle. An arc is a portion of the circle's circumference. A chord is a line segment that joins any two points on the circle's circumference.

There are two main "slices" of a circle: 1. The "pizza" slice is called a Sector. 2. And the Segment, which is cut from the circle by a "chord" (a line between two points on the circle).

You can work out the Area of a Sector by comparing its angle to the angle of a full circle. Note: we are using radiansfor the angles. This is the reasoning: Area of Sector = θ2 × r2 (when θ is in radians) Area of Sector = θ × π360 × r2 (when θ is in degrees)

The Area of a Segment is the area of a sector minus the triangular piece (shown in light blue here). There is a lengthy reason, but the result is a slight modification of the Sector formula: Area of Segment = θ − sin(θ)2 × r2 (when θ is in radians) Area of Segment = ( θ × π360 − sin(θ)2) × r2 (when θ is in degrees)

    The arc length (of a Sector or Segment) is: L = θ × r (when θ is in radians) L = θ × π180 × r (when θ is in degrees)

    • Circle. In geometry, a circle is a closed curve formed by a set of points on a plane that are the same distance from its center O. That distance is known as the radius of the circle.
    • Diameter. The diameter of a circle is a line segment that passes through the center of the circle and has its endpoints on the circle. All the diameters of the same circle have the same length.
    • Chord. A chord is a line segment with both endpoints on the circle. The diameter is a special chord that passes through the center of the circle. The diameter would be the longest chord in the circle.
    • Radius. The radius of the circle is a line segment from the center of the circle to a point on the circle. The plural of radius is radii. In the above diagram, O is the center of the circle and and are radii of the circle.

  3. Apr 25, 2024 · Segment of a circle is the area bounded by the chord and the arc formed from the endpoint of the chord. In other words, the chords divide the circle into two parts and these parts are called the segment of the circle. Segment Definition. Segment is formed between the chord and the arc between the endpoint of the chord.

  4. The difference between a chord and a secant is that a chord is a line segment whose endpoints are on the circumference of the circle whereas a secant passes through the circle forming a chord or diameter of the circle.

  5. May 23, 2021 · The distance from the center to the circle is its radius. The longest distance between two points on a circle is the diameter, which is a line segment running through the center. A circle is the shape with the shortest perimeter enclosing an area.
