Sep 4, 2022 · These lines are known as magnetic field lines or magnetic lines of force. As the magnetic field is a vector quantity it will have both magnitude and direction as shown in the image below. The strength of the magnetic field is given by the number of lines crossing a unit area perpendicular to the lines. A line drawn tangentially at any point on ...
The field lines emerge from the north pole (N), loop around to the south pole (S), and continue through the bar magnet back to the north pole. Magnetic field lines have several hard-and-fast rules: The direction of the magnetic field is tangent to the field line at any point in space. A small compass will point in the direction of the field line.
The magnetic field is the area around a magnetic body or a moving electric charge within which magnetic force acts. It can be generated by moving electric charges. The direction of the magnetic field is indicated by lines. At the same time, the electric fields are produced around the particles, which possess electric charges.
As shown in Figure \(\PageIndex{1}\), the direction of magnetic field lines is defined to be the direction in which the north end of a compass needle points. The magnetic field is traditionally called the B-field. Figure \(\PageIndex{1}\): Magnetic field lines are defined to have the direction that a small compass points when placed at a location.
The direction of the magnetic field at any point is parallel to the direction of nearby field lines, and the local density of field lines can be made proportional to its strength. Magnetic field lines are like the contour lines (constant altitude) on a topographic map in that they represent something continuous, and a different mapping scale would show more or fewer lines.
As with electric fields, the pictorial representation of magnetic field lines is very useful for visualizing the strength and direction of the magnetic field. As shown in Figure 20.9 , the direction of magnetic field lines is defined to be the direction in which the north pole of a compass needle points.

1: Explain why the magnetic field would not be unique (that is, not have a single value) at a point in space where magnetic field lines might cross. (Consider the direction of the field at such a point.) 2: List the ways in which magnetic field lines and electric field lines are similar. For example, the field direction is tangent to the line ...
