In 2023, the BBC polled 177 book experts in 56 countries to try and find the 100 greatest children's books ever written. The winner of the poll was Maurice Sendak's 1963 picture book "Where the Wild Things Are", with the authors Lewis Carroll, Astrid Lindgren, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and J. R. R. Tolkien rounding out the top 5.
