The Garden was established in 1891– with its existence largely being the result of an 1888 visit to the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew (a suburb in south-west London) by eminent British botanists Nathaniel Lord Britton and Elizabeth Britton.

Botanist Nathaniel Lord Britton wanted to emulate the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, near London. He desired to have NY one of the greatest botanical gardens in the world.
