In the sun's core, gravitational forces create tremendous pressure and temperatures. The temperature of the sun in this layer is about 27 million degrees Fahrenheit (15 million degrees Celsius). Hydrogen atoms are compressed and fuse together, creating helium. This process is called nuclear fusion. As the gases heat up, atoms break apart into charg...
Astronomers who have studied the composition of the sun have catalogued 67 chemical elements in the sun. There may be more, but in amounts too small for instruments to detect. Here is a table of the 10 most common elements in the sun, according to NASA Goddard Space Flight Center:

Dec 22, 2020 · The most common gases on the sun, by mass, are: hydrogen (about 70 percent) and helium (about 28 percent). The remainder is made up of other elements. Layers of the sun include the core, radiative zone, convection zone, photosphere, chromosphere, transition region and the corona.
The 10 most abundant gases in the Sun’s visible surface layer are listed in Table 15.2. Examine that table and notice that the composition of the Sun’s outer layer is very different from Earth’s crust, where we live.
Jan 12, 2018 · About 67 chemical elements have been detected in the sun. I'm sure you're not surprised that hydrogen is the most abundant element, accounting for over 90% of the atoms and over 70% of solar mass. The next most abundant element is helium, which accounts for almost just under 9% of the atoms and about 27% of the mass.

The 10 most abundant gases in the Sun’s visible surface layer are listed in Table 1. Examine that table and notice that the composition of the Sun’s outer layer is very different from Earth’s crust, where we live.
What is the Sun made of? The Sun is a huge, glowing sphere of hot gas. Most of this gas is hydrogen (about 70%) and helium (about 28%). Carbon, nitrogen and oxygen make up 1.5% and the other 0.5% is made up of small amounts of many other elements such as neon, iron, silicon, magnesium and sulfur.
