Feb 24, 2024 · Part of the process is to reach an early agreement on how the therapy will end and what success looks like. This may lead to a referral if required. While there are clear stages to the typical counseling process, other than termination, each may be ongoing.
- Relationship Building. The first step involves building a relationship and focuses on engaging clients to explore an issue that directly affects them.
- Problem Assessment. While the counselor and the client are in the process is established a relationship, a second process is taking place. Ex: Problem assessment.
- Goal setting. Goals remain the outcomes or results that clients requirements to realize at the conclusion of counseling. Goals would be designated and clear with care.
- Intervention & problem solving. There is a different points of view concerning what a good counselor should do with clients depending on the theoretical positions that the counselor subscribes to.
- People will not speak about feelings openly, and tend to blame others for causing their pain, rather than take responsibility for themselves: ‘If only my friend would stop doing that, I’d feel better.’
- There is slightly less rigidity, with a small movement towards wondering whether responsibility should be taken by self, but not actually doing so: ‘It’s not my fault; it’s theirs – isn’t it?’
- The person is beginning to consider accepting responsibility for self, but generalises and focuses more on past than present feelings: ‘I felt angry, but then everyone does, don’t they?’
- The client begins to describe their own here-and-now feelings, but tends to be critical of self for having these: ‘I feel guilty about that, but I shouldn’t really.’
