Tone and voice in writing are related but distinct concepts: Voice is the unique writing style or personality of the writing that makes it distinct to a particular author. It's a combination of the author's syntax, word choice, rhythm, and other stylistic elements.
There are five elements of voice: diction, detail, imagery, syntax, tone. Diction is an author’s choice of words; it is the foundation of voice and contributes to all of its elements. When reading serious literature – NEVER skip words you don’t know! Effective voice = words that are clear, concrete, exact.
