Founded by the Ancient Romans in the 1st century B.C., many Roman structures still remain including the city gate, the Arco dei Gavi, the Ponte Pietra bridge, the Roman theatre, and the Arena.
- Castelvecchio and Ponte Scaligero. On the banks of the Adige, Castelvecchio was built by the Scaligeri in 1354-55, an impressive defensive fortress certain to remind any rivals of the power of the della Scala family.
