  1. Volleyball practice planning is a critical step in creating successful teams. It provides the opportunity to develop and master essential techniques, strategies, and tactics. The practice plan should include drills to help players build skills and confidence while also encouraging teamwork. Creating an effective plan requires detailed preparation.

  2. Always start with some type of competitive drill to get players engaged from the very beginning. This could be small-sided games like 2v2 or 3v3, or full team competitions like “King of the Court”. Make sure to change up the warm up drill each practice to keep things fresh. These opening drills set the tone and energy level for practice.

    • 6:00pm-6:15pm. 2 laps jogging around the court, ending with player huddle (2 minutes) Check-in with players and give them an overview of practice (2 minutes)
    • 6:15pm-6:25pm. Serving Progressions with a partner and quick individual coaching (see Practice Plan PDF below for full description) NOTE: After the warm-up game (which normally gets pretty intense for my teams), I like to slow things down a bit and give my players time to beath and work on their individual serving.
    • 6:25pm-6:35pm. Around the World Competition Edition (video below)
    • 6:35pm-6:45pm. Hitting Lines Versus Defense. NOTE: A great drill to work on passing in a game-like situation, and to practice “pass-set-hit” in a more chaotic setting than from a coach’s toss.
  3. On the coach’s whistle, each team serves – multiple players can serve simultaneously. The first team to complete ten good serves that land on the other side of the court wins. (For more advanced volleyball teams, ensure the ball is served and aimed in a targeted area) The losing volleyball group rotates off, and a new group comes on.
