- Setting. The first of the story elements is the story setting. All stories have a setting. The setting includes the time and place in which the story will be taking place.
- Characters. The next of the elements of a story is the characters. Of course, characters are one of the most important elements of a novel or short story.
- Conflict. Nobody wants to read a novel or short story without conflict – so you’ll find every story will have some sort of conflict. What would be the point?
- Theme. The next of the story elements is theme. The theme is the author’s central argument or big idea they want to convey. Themes are often associated with a ‘moral of a story’ or an analogy (a hidden meaning in the text).
- Something Unanticipated. When I first started thinking about what makes a compelling story, I looked to our story spotting framework. As our framework explains, a story must contain something unanticipated.
- Relevance and Relatability. A compelling story is relevant and relatable. Naturally, we are more interested in stories that are relevant to our everyday lives.
- Detail. A compelling story is specific and vivid. We want to visualise the events as they happen and feel the emotional ups and downs. We want to be absorbed!
- Emotion. A compelling story has emotion. The stronger the emotion, the more compelling and memorable the story. We remember what we feel. Topics that can evoke strong emotions include death, the safety of children, sex and power, all of which are intrinsically linked to the human condition and our desire to survive as a species.
- Plot. The plot is the events or actions that drive your story — it describes the “what” of your tale. The plot lets the reader know what’s happening, describes the problems your characters are trying to solve, and gives the details on how they attempt to solve them.
- Setting. The setting of your story is both the physical location and point in time in which your plot takes place. For some stories (like the fantasy novels mentioned above) setting is a huge part of the story.
- Characters. The characters are the people, animals, beings, or personified objects driving your story. A story can have many characters or just one main character as the focus.
- Point of view. What changed in our two stories above about the Wicked Witch of the West? The point of view! Point of view (or POV) describes the lens through which the story is being told.
