- The Thames Barrier. The UK’s Thames Barrier is an iconic example of building robustness and flexibility in the face of uncertainty. By holding back storm surges and high tides, it helps protect 1.3 million people, £275 billion in property and infrastructure, and places of high historical and cultural value from flooding.
- Risk-pooling in Africa. The Africa Disaster Risks Financing (ADRiFi) programme gives African countries access to market-based solutions for transferring some of their climate risks and to benefit from a payout in the event of a disaster.
- Nature-based solutions. China uses a rigorous science-based process to identify priority areas for biodiversity conservation, ecosystem services management, and disaster risk reduction.
- Community involvement in Indonesia. Participatory planning (involving local communities in the planning and decision making process) makes it possible to develop shared goals, to coordinate action, and to build on traditional and local knowledge.
Mar 20, 2018 · Averting the crisis. Climate change adaptation can lessen the economic costs of climate change, as illustrated by our model simulation and various examples around the world. But investing in successful adaptation strategies is expensive. It will further stretch the budgets of already very poor countries, where the adverse effects of climate ...
Jan 30, 2024 · Climate change adaptation refers to actions that help reduce vulnerability to the current or expected impacts of climate change like weather extremes and hazards, sea-level rise, biodiversity loss, or food and water insecurity. Many adaptation measures need to happen at the local level, so rural communities and cities have a big role to play.
- Build resilient foundations with rapid and inclusive development. Poverty and the lack of access to basic services—including infrastructure, financial services, health care, and social protection—are strong predictors of vulnerability to climate change.
- Help people and firms do their part. It’s critical to boost the adaptive capacity of households and firms: many already have incentives to adapt, but they need help overcoming obstacles, ranging from a lack of information and financing, to behavioral biases and imperfect markets.
- Revise land use plans and protect critical infrastructure. In addition to direct support to households and businesses, governments must also play a role in protecting public investments, assets, and services.
- Help people and firms recover faster and better. Risks and impacts cannot be reduced to zero. Governments must develop strategies to ensure that when disasters do occur, people and firms can cope without devastating long-term consequences, and can recover quickly.
- Early warning systems. Research shows that just 24 hours warning of an oncoming heatwave or storm can reduce the subsequent damage by 30 per cent. Early warning systems that provide climate forecasts are one of the most cost-effective adaptation measures, yielding around nine dollars of total benefits for every dollar invested.
- Ecosystem restoration. The UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration launched by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and partners in 2021 triggered a global movement to restore the world’s ecosystems.
- Climate-resilient infrastructure. Climate-resilient infrastructure refers to assets and systems such as roads, bridges, and power lines that can withstand shocks from extreme climate impacts.
- Water supplies and security. The story of climate change is, in many ways, a story about water, whether it is floods, droughts, rising sea levels, or even wildfires.
May 23, 2024 · UNEP has supported over 75 climate change adaptation projects across more than 50 countries. These initiatives aim to benefit approximately 3.7 million people, restore 179,000 hectares of land, enhance climate adaptation knowledge among 102,000 individuals and 131 institutions, and establish over 1,100 water harvesting structures and 82 weather stations.
