Nov 9, 2014 · Johnson Woolen Mills makes some really beautiful things, and it's well worth the trek out to Johnson if you're within a couple hours (I used to live in Southern Vermont, and have been lucky enough to visit several times). Their store is amazing- backpacks, shirts, mittens, vests, etc. in a huge variety of their own fabrics.

But the standard issue around here still seems to be Johnson Woolen Mills’ products, same as always, still made, I now know, some 95 miles northwest of Dan & Whit’s in the Green Mountains town of Johnson, Vermont.

Johnson Woolen Mills, started up by Andrew Dow, has been manufacturing in Vermont since 1842, when they began producing fabric from the wool of local sheep. The company is now run by Stacy Barrows Manosh, who took over after the three generations of family before her.
Now owned by a fourth-generation family member, Johnson Woolen Mills operates out of a modern manufacturing facility but still uses many traditional processes to make their clothing. They’ve also continued their 200-year legacy of ensuring that there is no waste with their products – all scraps are either used or recycled.
The company began in 1842 when local farmers brought their own wool in to the local mill above the Gihon River, owned by Andrew Dow, to have it woven into cloth. [1] [2] The business was originally a fabric manufacturer and began to make its own clothing in the early 20th century. [3]
