Jun 8, 2023 · But again, O2 are held back by their middling speeds. Independent testers Speedtest and Opensignal put typical speeds on O2 between 80.57 - 92.3 Mbps with peak speeds up to 214.2 Mbps. That’s not to say O2’s 5G is slow. It’s a massive and welcome step change from their 4G data.

5G coverage
O2 launched its 5G service on October 17th, 2019. It initially launched in six cities but its 5G service is now available in many more locations. At the time of writing you can get O2 5G in parts of over 3,200 places, accounting for around 65% of the UK population outdoors. If you don’t have O2 5G where you are yet, it should be worth waiting for, as it is far faster than 4G, so you can download and upload files faster and stream in higher quality. More excitingly, 5G could open up whole new...
4G coverage
O2’s 4G coverage currently rivals Vodafone's at around 99% of the UK population, but is seemingly slightly behind EE's and Three’s, based on the latest available information at the time of writing. The difference is small though – we’re talking a percent at most, so you can be confident that across the UK as a whole you’ll get competitive coverage on O2, though it’s always worth checking what coverage is like in your area before signing up to a network. 4G from O2 is now available in thousand...
3G coverage
O2 has around 99% population coverage with 3G, so it’s a similar situation to its 4G. Note that O2 will begin switching 3G off in 2025, so it can repurpose the spectrum for 4G and 5G. You can use O2’s coverage checker above to find out more about O2 coverage in your area, including signal strengths and details on both indoor and outdoor coverage.
O2 offers Pay Monthly phones, along with SIM Only plans and Data Only plans, all of which you can see details of below. The network also offers Pay As You Go (detailed further down), and mobile broadband plans. O2 has a range of Pay Monthly, SIM Only and Pay As You Go plans available. 5G is also available at no extra cost. O2’s Pay Monthly plans ar...
Network speeds
O2’s average download speed is 23.1Mbps according to Opensignal, while its average upload speed is 5.3Mbps, and its average latency (the time in which it takes for the network to respond to a request) is 38.1ms. Those results aren’t great – as you can see in the table above O2 comes out slower than any major rival, with EE in particular storming ahead at almost double the speed, though O2’s latency is better than Three’s or Vodafone’s. Note that these speed results are from September 2024 and...
Traffic management
O2’s traffic management policy allows you to use your full data allowance without any restriction in the UK (within fair usage limits), even during peak hours, and once you’ve run out your data service will cease until you purchase more or reach your next month of allowances. However, the network adds that it will always prioritize emergency voice traffic (which shouldn’t noticeably affect you and is a good thing if you ever need to call emergency services). O2 will also warn users whose use...
Network frequencies
O2 uses both the 800MHz band and 2300MHz band for 4G. It’s got a decent amount of spectrum and the 800MHz band is well suited to delivering coverage across the UK. It’s long range, so it can travel a long way between base stations, making it suited to rural environments. But it’s also good at penetrating walls and other solid objects, making it a good fit for towns and cities too, and ensuring strong coverage both indoors and out. The 2300MHz band on the other hand is more suited to busy area...
Customer service can be hard to judge, but in a 2023 Ofcom customer service report, O2 was found to have a 85% satisfaction rate from customers, with 9% finding reason to complain, 53% being happy with the way their complaint was handled, and 10 out of every 100,000 subscribers making a complaint to Ofcom. Those numbers are all middling compared to...
O2 combines a sturdy network with high data limits and special offers through O2 Priority. Roaming on O2 is also included, and there are a range of flexible tariffs to choose from whether you Pay Monthly, go SIM Only or Pay As You Go. O2’s main issue is simply that its speeds don’t appear as high as rivals, but if you have 5G then the available spe...
Jul 13, 2023 · They say they have the fastest 5G in the UK and results from Opensignal and Speedtest by Ookla confirm that. Three’s typical 5G speeds sit between 228.4 Mbps - 285.2 Mbps while O2 got between 80.57 Mbps - 92.3 Mbps. Peak 5G speeds on Three can get up to a blistering 687.13 Mbps, while they can get up to a decent 214.2 Mbps on O2.
These providers no longer use O2’s network. No access to O2’s network on these. There are two providers that used to use O2’s network - these being Virgin Mobile and Lyca Mobile. Each has a different reason for not offering access to O2’s signal any more. Virgin Mobile stopped selling to new customers a while ago.
Calling/messaging over WiFi or 4G is no different to making a standard call or sending a standard text message*. It comes out of your monthly tariff allowances – or be charged at the normal tariff rate. There are no extra charges. A miniute is just a minute, howeer you make a call. And you won't use any data to make a 4G call.
Jun 25, 2024 · Coverage and speeds. According to data from a Statista report in 2023, O2 is the worst network for download speeds in the UK, with a paltry 19.3 megabits per second. That might not sound so bad to the uninitiated, but it’s less than half EE’s 47.7 Mbps score and is well behind 3’s 35.4 Mbps download speeds.
