Premium gas usually has an octane rating of 91 or higher, while regular gas sits around 87. The higher octane rating of premium gas doesn’t increase its energy content but rather its resistance to knock. Knocking, or pre-ignition, occurs when part of the air-fuel mixture in the engine’s cylinders ignites too early.
