- A well-planned lesson is your best offense here. If you account for everything ahead of time, you won’t have to spend nearly as much time during the lesson managing behaviors.
- On that note: When I plan my lessons, I plan for no more than 15 minutes sitting still at a time and no more than 15 minutes of them being quiet at a time.
- Bringing my voice down quieter is a new trick I’ve been loving! It helps to regulate them when they’re getting a little rowdy, they know I’m ‘serious’ when I’m quiet, and the change in volume catches their attention.
- Kiddos that I anticipate might be turkeys in my lesson, I try to connect with as soon as I walk in (before I ‘officially’) begin. I greet them individually, or give a compliment, or ask a question about what they’re working on.
- Thorough lesson plan. No strategy is more important than a thorough lesson plan for classroom management. Having a pre-determined, hook, instructional strategy, demonstration and practice activities will help you to anticipate problems and structure the lesson around the time you have.
- Establish routines. Set yourself and your students up with routines. Nothing spells chaos like changing up the game every single time you see your students.
- Greet students by name. Taking 3 minutes to greet each student by name goes a long way for relationship-building (and the biggest key to classroom management).
- Genuine enthusiasm. This may seem like a no-brainer, but show your students how enthusiastic you are about your time together and the topic you’re covering.
