Jan 5, 2022 · Antofagasta, a bit further south, is the most cosmopolitan city in the Atacama with a string of high-rise buildings that give it a bit of a Miami-in-the-desert vibe. Bahia Inglesa, even further south, is the most picturesque coastal resort with sugary white beaches that lead to clear turquoise waters.
- Visit Piedras Rojas (Red Rocks) and the Salar de Talar, Ruta 23. This was actually one of our final day trips and definitely my highlight from this list of things to do in the Atacama Desert.
- See the dawn at El Tatio Geysers. With 80 active geysers on 10 square kilometers (2,470 acres), the El Tatio geyser field (5am- 5pm daily, $15,000 CLP entrance fee; more information here) is the third largest in the world, and at 4,320 meters elevation (14,170 feet), it’s also the highest.
- Visit Laguna Miscanti and Laguna Miñiques. Located only a short distance from Piedras Rojas and the Salar de Talar are two gleaming lagoons, Miscanti and Miñiques (enter between 9am-4pm; site closes at 6pm; $10,000 CLP adults and $8,000 CLP children entrance fee; book in advance here).
- Go off the beaten path at the Valle del Arcoíris (Rainbow Valley) and the petroglyphs of Hierbas Buenas. Perhaps the least visited of the places on this list of things to do in the Atacama Desert, Valle del Arcoíris ($5,000 CLP entrance fee) and the nearby Yerbas Buenas petroglyphs ($5,000 CLP entrance fee) are two other places that I strongly recommend, particularly if you’ve rented a car.
Jan 6, 2024 · Tierra Atacama Hotel & Spa, the first solar-powered property in South America, has a spa, dining area, and curated excursions. It's also one of the most popular resorts in the desert, due to its ...
- Float in Lagunas Baltinacha, Laguna Cejar’s Little Sister. One of the best things to do in the Atacama Desert is to visit one of the salt lagoons. While Laguna Cejar is by far the largest and most popular, we recommended heading to Lagunas Baltinacha.
- Watch the Sunset at the Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley) No trip to the Atacama Desert is complete without visiting the Valle de la Luna, the crown jewel in the Atacama Desert.
- Catch the Sunrise with Flamingos at Laguna Chaxa in Reserva Nacional Los Flamencos. The Reserva Nacional Los Flamencos at Laguna Chaxa is a real Attenborough experience that is truly amazing.
- Wander the Streets of San Pedro de Atacama Chile. The capital city of San Pedro de Atacama in the Atacama Desert is unlike other Chilean cities and exploring this age old cities is one of the best things to do in the Atacama Desert.
- Valle de la Luna. Barely ten minutes from San Pedro de Atacama you’ll find a wonderland of otherworldly rock formations, coated in what appears to be snow.
- El Tatio Geysers. Roughly an hour and a half from San Pedro is one of the highest and biggest geyser fields in the entire world: the El Tatio Geysers. Meaning either “oven” or “grandfather” in the extinct Kunza language of the Atacameño people, the field is covered in eighty active geysers, as well as hot springs, fumaroles, and sinter deposits (a kind of chemical sediment that forms the strange rock formations found around geysers all over the world).
- The Hand of the Desert. To reach this giant sculpture of a hand rising out of the desert floor requires a more than four-hour drive from San Pedro, but if you’re planning on visiting the nearby port city of Antofagasta or want to go for a long drive, it’s worth the trip.
- Tara Salt Flats. The Uyuni Salt Flats in Bolivia are by far the most famous salt flats in South America, and while the Tara salt flats may not be as vast, they are equally beautiful.
Feb 18, 2021 · Explore San Pedro de Atacama. Almost 1,150 miles (1,850 km) from Santiago, San Pedro de Atacama is the tourist capital of northern Chile. An oasis in one of the driest deserts on earth, the area has long been a place of human settlement. Set at an altitude of 7,874 feet (2,400 m), it was originally part of the Atacameño culture and functioned ...
