- Communication skills. Communication skills will play a key role in your relationship with your clients. You need to know how to confidently set boundaries, communicate ideas, and provide guidance to the person before you without harshness or condemnation.
- Patience. Patience will become a critical trait as a counselor. You will encounter clients who struggle to make progress or who make decisions that do not benefit them.
- Confidence. Counselors must be confident in the services they provide and how they help clients. When someone comes to you for help with a particular issue, you are there to provide them with clear guidance and assistance.
- Non-judgmental. Counselors also regularly meet with clients who have made choices that they do not agree with. The counseling session, however, is not about letting the client know what they have done wrong.
- Empathy. If empathy is difficult for you to express when around other people, you may simply be shy. Being shy is okay, but it is a difficulty you will need to overcome if you plan to be a school counselor.
- Good Listener. It can be hard to be a good listener. Being a good listener means more than just being able to be quiet long enough to let other people get a word in, although that is certainly an important part of it.
- Strong Assessment Skills. Assessment skills may be one of the hardest to acquire on your own, especially assessment skills that relate to specific situations.
- Authoritative as Needed. This is a difficult skill for many who would like to be school counselors. You may be used to seeing everything from others’ perspectives, and you are able to see where they are coming from.

If the counselor cannot answer a specific question they expect the counselor to find the answer and get back to them in a timely manner.
