It is unknown when people began to add carbonation to traditional root beers, but there are records indicating that one early entrepreneur , George Twitchell of Philadelphia, began selling a root concentrate syrup intended to be mixed with soda in 1850.

By 1893, Hires Root Beer was being bottled and distributed widely, which made it one of the first soft drinks to be sold in bottles. The production and distribution process was greatly improved by advances in technology, allowing for greater consistency and shelf life.
Hires would become the largest manufacturer of the soft drink “root beer” in the world. But at first the drink was slow to catch on. Conwell did persuade Hires to present his product at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition. Four years later, Hires marketed a liquid concentrate and in 1893 launched a bottled, ready-to-drink product.
