The second in a series of planetary exploration spacecraft, this was the world's first spacecraft to fly-by a planet. Both Mariner 1 and 2 were part of a 1961 NASA planetary exploration initiative that took some of its design from the Ranger program, Mariner 2 bears a striking resemblance to the basic framework, solar panels, and antennas of its Ranger predecessor.
