However, the last years of Solomon's reign were marked by failure and great decline: On a moral level - Solomon indulged in lust and sensuality: he married 1,000 foreign women. On a political level - Solomon made political and commercial agreements with pagan peoples and nations; he also imposed high tributes on his own people (1 Kings 12:4).
- Family. Solomon was the tenth son of King David and the second son of Bathsheba. Six of his half-brothers, Amnon, Chileab, Absalom, Adonijah, Shephatiah, and Ithream, had been born in Hebron, each of a different mother (2 Sam 3:2-5).

God also gave Solomon peace on all sides during most of his reign (1 Kings 4:20–25). One common illustration of Solomon’s wisdom is his judging a dispute over the identity of the true mother of an infant child (1 Kings 3:16-28).
