Oct 28, 2024 · In 1792, during construction of the new Mint, 1,500 silver half dimes were made in the cellar of a nearby building. These half dimes were probably given out to dignitaries and friends and not released into circulation. The Mint delivered the nation’s first circulating coins on March 1, 1793: 11,178 copper cents.

Silver coins (half dime, dime, quarter, half dollar, dollar) originally consisted of a fineness of .8924, changing to .900 in 1837. In 1866, the new five-cent coin became the first to eliminate silver with a new composition of copper and nickel.

Copper was used and accepted as a medium from which coins could be fashioned. While the economic importance of cent coinage in commerce today has largely diminished, the significance of all U.S. copper coinage was foundational to the building of the country.
