Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet was published in two quarto editions prior to the publication of the First Folio of 1623. These are referred to as Q1 and Q2. The first printed edition, Q1, appeared in early 1597, printed by John Danter.

Shakespeare’s source for the play’s story was Arthur Brooke’s The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet (1562), an English verse translation of this Italian tale.
Shakespeare published most of his work from 1594 to 1613. He wrote Romeo and Juliet sometime between 1591 and 1596, close to the end of the Renaissance. It was common for Renaissance authors to rework existing stories.
