Sep 29, 2024 · To several of the early printed reports is attached the following note, (I copy from the sermon and report for 1716):- ‘All schools above mentioned have been set-up since 1697, except that belonging to the New Church in St. Margaret, Westminster, by the name of the Blue Coat School, which was set up Lady-day, 1688, for 50 boys, and the school of Norton-Folgate, erected in 1691, for 60 boys’.
This decision, made by the Greenwich Council Cabinet on 17 th January 2012 was in spite of a public consultation in which over 90% of the responses opposed closure. The Staff, pupils, parents and governors have conducted a vigorous campaign to save the school, but all to no avail. The proposal will see the school close in August 2014.
Greenwich Blue Coat Girls’ School 1928 Rose Ellen Boniface was admitted to the school on 22 April 1931 (aged 14) and was there for two years until February 1933. She took up a position as a parlour maid in the home of the Hon. Mrs Brassey of Bentley Square at the wages of £24 per annum.
