This decision, made by the Greenwich Council Cabinet on 17 th January 2012 was in spite of a public consultation in which over 90% of the responses opposed closure. The Staff, pupils, parents and governors have conducted a vigorous campaign to save the school, but all to no avail. The proposal will see the school close in August 2014.
The governors, with the support of the school senior leadership team, accepted the offer, subject to a suitable site being agreed, and the school was looking forward with anticipation to beginning an exciting project with the building ready for occupation in 2012, during the Olympic year.

The Greenwich Blue Coat Foundation (also known as “The Blue Coat Trust”) is a Charitable Trust established from the original Blue Coat School for Girls which was founded in 1700 by “some charitable ladies”, who were associated with St Alphege’s Church, Greenwich. They were led by Mrs Margaret Flamsteed, wife of Sir John Flamsteed, the first Astronomer Royal.
