During the time of the Greek military junta of 1967–1974 she lived in Paris, where she studied ethnomusicology and orchestration, and improvised with jazz musicians. Then she began to compose popular songs.
From 1969-74 she studied ethnomusicology in Paris and, on returning to Greece, founded the Laboratory for Traditional Instruments at the ORA Cultural Centre. She has since been an active campaigner on behalf of Greece's musical resources.
Her music for theatre was highlighted in Concert in Athens, an exceptional live recording from November 2010, featuring longtime collaborator, oboist Vangelis Christopoulos, US violist Kim Kashkashian, Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek and the composer herself.
