Pay television. Pay television, also known as subscription television, premium television or, when referring to an individual service, a premium channel, [1][2][3][4] refers to subscription -based television services, usually provided by multichannel television providers, but also increasingly via digital terrestrial and streaming television.

Throughout the 1970s, Canadian cable operators explored again and again the potential for pay television, trying to persuade the CRTC to approve it. In the U.S, meanwhile, Time-Warner launched HBO (Home Box Office), the first American pay TV service using microwave distribution at the start, and then in 1975, satellite distribution.
