Reading (/ ˈ r ɛ d ɪ ŋ / RED-ing; (Pennsylvania Dutch: Reddin) is a city in and the county seat of Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States.The city had a population of 95,112 at the 2020 census and is the fourth-most populous city in Pennsylvania after Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Allentown.
In 1748, the town was laid out by Thomas and Richard Penn, the sons of William Penn. The name was chosen after Penn's own county seat, Reading, in Berkshire, England. In 1752, Reading became the county seat of Berks. During the French and Indian war, Reading became a military base for a chain of forts along the Blue Mountains.
