Apr 21, 2019 · On Thursday evening, April 18th, the Oakville Blades completed the sweep of the defending champions Wellington Dukes. They've now won their third Buckland Cup. That was the first sweep the Ontario Junior Hockey League Championship Series has witnessed in 21 years.
Teddy McGeen scored what proved to be the game winner just over halfway through the third period as the Wellington Dukes held on for a 3-2 win in Georgetown in Game 5 of the OJHL finals last night. McGeen and Bryce Yetman each had a goal and an assist and Andrew Rinaldi also scored to lead Wellington to a 3 games to 2 series lead.
The Dukes have won the Dudley Hewitt Cup as Central Canadian Junior A Champions twice (2003, 2011). The Dukes won the Buckland Cup on April 22, 2018. In the 1970s and early 1980s, the Wellington Dukes were members of the Quinte-St. Lawrence Junior C Hockey League. The league folded in 1986.
