The palace originated as a medieval farmhouse in 1533 on a street called Int Nortende (now: Noordeinde, meaning in the North End). Over the next hundred years it was expanded into a fine family estate for the son of Willem of Orange, Frederik Hendrik. Frederik Hendrik enlarged the house dramatically, known then as the Oude Hof (Old Court).
Following the death of Maria Theresa, the imperial family’s interest in Schloss Hof ended, the complex was increasingly neglected, and finally, in 1898, it was reassigned for military use. However, before then, the original state of the palace was well documented, and this enabled the comprehensive reconstruction work which took place from 2002.

As the constitution required that a summer and winter palace be provided for the sovereign, extensive renovations were made to the Oude Hof which then became the winter residence of King Willem I in 1817. Subsequent sovereigns used the palace sporadically – Willem II didn’t use it at all, while Willem III used it as his winter residence.
