May 16, 2017 · Morris Frank was set on the path that would become his life’s mission: to get Seeing Eye Dogs accepted all over the country. Frank and Eustis established the first guide dog training school in the US in Nashville, on January 29, 1929.
Humphrey was hired to breed German shepherds at a centre in Switzerland that had been set up by Dorothy Harrison Eustis of Philadelphia and began the work that led to the Seeing-Eye Dog program. The first dogs produced at the centre, known as Fortunate Fields, were used for military and police work and for tracking missing persons.
In 1930, two British women, Muriel Crooke and Rosamund Bond, heard about The Seeing Eye and contacted Dorothy Eustis, who sent over one of her trainers. In 1931, the first four British guide dogs completed their training and three years later The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association was founded in the UK.
