Benton County was named for Thomas Hart Benton who served Missouri in the United States Senate continously for 30 years. He was defeated for election in 1851. His was the longest tenure of political office in Missouri, tying with Senator Francis M. Cockrell.
In 1852 peccary and mastodon remains were found by Dr. R. W. Gibbs of Warsaw, and displayed in his drug store. But "Prince" of the early day archaeologists was Albert Carl Koch, or "Dr. Koch" as he began to call himself in 1845, who also was among the first to collect mastodon bones in America.
