Jarvis Collegiate was founded as a private school in 1797. In 1807 the government of Ontario, then known as the British colony of Upper Canada, took over the school and incorporated it in a network of eight new, public grammar schools (secondary schools), one for each of the eight districts of Upper Canada. Apr 9, 2021 · Jarvis Collegiate Institute was founded as the Home District Grammar School in 1807. The school began with five students in a one-storey building attached to the headmaster’s home, which once stood at the southeast corner of King St E and George St. In 1812, John Strachan (the future first Anglican Bishop of Toronto) became headmaster.
Oct 30, 2016 · On opening day, June 1, 1807, five students - all boys - were enrolled. By the end of the year there were 37 students, including some girls. The Jarvis family was well represented, with William Jr., young Eliza Ann (age 6) and the grown-up Maria (age 19) joining the school before the end of the year.
The school now known as “Jarvis Collegiate” opened on June 1, 1807, as the “Home District Grammar School for York.” The first classes were held in the home of the Rev. George Okill Stuart, then-Rector of St James Church.
