  1. The Sumerians in Mesopotamia were the first known and recorded civilization in history. Around 6000 BCE, the first cities emerged in Ancient Sumer. The Sumerians are also noted for their development of written script , the cuneiform. These written sources could only be appreciated when combined with an understanding of the Sumerian civilization.
