The first nurse midwifery graduate program in Ohio and the 14th in the country was established in Cleveland in 1983. Nursing education in Cleveland in the 1980s presented a confusing picture. The American Nurses Assn. had taken the position in the mid-1960s that preparation for entry into the practice of professional nursing should be at the baccalaureate level.

Richardson, RN, BS, who studied midwifery in London, England, at the Hospital for Mothers and Babies and in 1928 was named Directress of the Manhattan Maternity and Dispensary School of Nursing, including the course in midwifery. 2 None of the graduates of Manhattan Midwifery School subsequently started other nurse-midwifery education programs.
