The Prayer Book of 1789 was the first for the U. S. Episcopal Church and served the Church for over 100 years, until the revision of 1892. This book owed much to its predecessor, the English 1662 Book of Common Prayer, and, at least for the major services, is very similar to it.

When first published, the prayer book lacked an ordinal, the book containing the rites for the ordination of deacons and priests and the consecration of bishops. The 1550 ordinal was published in March 1550 to fill this need, replacing the pontifical from Sarum practice.
Though the 1552 prayer book had been taken to by the minister of Hugh Willoughby's ill-fated Arctic expedition, the 1559 prayer book was the first English prayer book to reach the New World. Robert Wolfall , minister for Martin Frobisher 's 1578 expedition, was reported by Richard Hakluyt to have celebrated the Communion upon the expedition's arrival at Frobisher Bay in July.
