History. March 13, 2023. The State Library was one of the first state agencies created, established in 1817, to serve the information and research needs of state government. As Ohio grew, so did the responsibilities of the agency, including the development of library services throughout Ohio. Below is a timeline of notable events in our history.

The board members are appointed by the State Board of Education and each member serves a five-year term of office. Under the Ohio Revised Code, section 3375.01, the State Library Board is responsible for the State Library of Ohio and a statewide program of development and coordination of library services. [2]
Jul 21, 2017 · Governor Thomas Worthington purchased the first collection of 509 books for the State Library from the Philadelphia bookseller Matthew Carey, using money from a contingency fund provided by the Ohio General Assembly in 1816. In early 1817, the General Assembly issued a resolution, giving their thanks to the Governor “for his attention in commencing a state Library for the use of the members.”
Under the Ohio Revised Code, section 3375.01, the State Library Board is responsible for the State Library of Ohio and a statewide program of development and coordination of library services. The State Library leads and coordinates several councils and review committees. The State Library of Ohio's history spans more than 200 years.

Feb 3, 2021 · Still Middleport’s library today. Built 1914 at 224 West Johnson Street, Upper Sandusky, OH. Today the building houses a doctor’s office, below. There is a Wikipedia website for every state where a Carnegie library was built. Ohio’s was missing pictures for almost 50 of the libraries…which had been missing since 2009.
