Jun 20, 2020 · The present site of Vernon was purchased in 1908 for the sum of $290.00, with a down payment of $100.00 made by the trustees. The trustees also voted to change the church’s name from Burton Chapel to Vernon AME Church in honor of Registrar of the Treasury, W. T. Vernon, who was appointed by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1906.
Historic Vernon African Methodist Episcopal Church was founded in 1905 and the basement of the current edifice was built in 1919. During the worst race massacre in American history, the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921, the superstructure, parsonage, and sanctuary still under-construction were destroyed but the basement remained as a symbol of God's persevering power.

Around the same time, the first AME church in Tulsa was led by Rev. J.E. Roy. According to Vernon’s website, the church was located in a one-room house on North Detroit Street within Greenwood. In 1906, Rev. R.A. Devers became the pastor, moving the church briefly to Gurley Hall on North Greenwood Avenue, then to Barksdale Hall on East Archer, where membership grew from eight to 16.

During the Tulsa Race Massacre, the church was destroyed, with only the outer brick of the first floor and the basement surviving. The rebuilding of the church was completed in 1928 and still stands today as the only structure in Greenwood that pre-dates the 1921 Massacre.
