Dec 28, 2023 · In 1989, contaminants were discovered in the aquifer under Elmira, the source of the town’s drinking water. The town now has water piped in from elsewhere in the region. Much of the contamination came from a chemical plant, Uniroyal Chemical at the time, which had haphazardly disposed of chemical waste on the property and in the creek.

The issue of contaminated groundwater first came to light in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The area has since accessed its drinking water from Waterloo.

The contaminants were discovered more than three decades ago, and the plume of Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) and chlorobenzene.contamination has decreased in size by about 60 per cent over the past 30 years.
