Much of the contamination came from a chemical plant, Uniroyal Chemical at the time, which had haphazardly disposed of chemical waste on the property and in the creek.

The issue of contaminated groundwater first came to light in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The area has since accessed its drinking water from Waterloo.
