ELMIRA, NY (WENY) -- The Elmira Water Board is notifying city residents and customers of its upcoming annual spring hydrant and main flushing program, which will get underway in April. The flushing will begin on Thursday, April 4th, and run through April 22nd. Large mains will be flushed between 7AM and 3PM on April 4th and 5th.

Dec 28, 2023 · In 1989, contaminants were discovered in the aquifer under Elmira, the source of the town’s drinking water. The town now has water piped in from elsewhere in the region. Much of the contamination came from a chemical plant, Uniroyal Chemical at the time, which had haphazardly disposed of chemical waste on the property and in the creek.
