I'm watching it directly from the watchespn website (rather than clicking from the US Open site). Not sure if that makes a difference but it's working for me. I don't have cable either.

According to the US open website I should be able to see "all 16 courts" from 11am to 11pm on ESPN+. I'm logged in now and only see a select few games I am able to watch, for example the Keys v. Gauff match in the main stadium is nowhere to be found.
IIRC, the matches on the big courts streamed on ESPN3, which would be free generally (it requires your ISP having a deal with ESPN, but most in the US do). You'd just get different commentators than you would if you watched the ESPN/ESPN2 streams (which required a compatible cable TV subscription).
