After providing a working definition of Islamic psychology, this chapter explores its historical and methodological origins, suggesting that its early success was due to Islamic scriptural motivation and inspiration, as well as to some intertwining socio-political factors.
People who practice Islam thought it was necessary to maintain positive mental health in order to partake in prayer and other religious obligations. [3] Concepts from Islamic thought have been reexamined by Muslim psychologists and scholars in the 20th and 21st centuries. [4]
This raises the question, what would contemporary psychology look like if it had developed in the Islamic world and whose primary scholars were practicing Muslims as opposed to it having emerged from a Western secular context—would it be called Islamic Psychology?
