The growth in R&D spending in 2020 was driven primarily by the federal government, which provided an additional $1.2 billion in funding over the previous year across all R&D sectors to reach $8.3 billion. Regionally, the growth in R&Dexpenditures in 2020 from 2019 was led by Ontario (+$1.0 billion to $19.3 billion), followed by Quebec (+$360.0 million to $10.5 billion) and British Columbia (+$230.0 million to $5.2 billion). The largest decline in R&Dexpenditures over the same period was recorded in Alberta (-$229.0 million to $3.6 billion).
On an international scale, Canada's R&D intensity ratio of 1.8 remained below the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development's (OECD) average of 2.7—although Canada's position rose by two spots to 17th in 2020.
