Gaelic is a close relative of Irish and Manx Gaelic. The Gaelic language is believed to have come to what is now Scotland from what is now Ireland in around 500AD. The term Scot comes from the Latin word Scoti, meaning a Gaelic speaker. These Scots established the kingdom of Dál Riata in modern-day Argyll.

The earliest known use of the noun scot is in the Middle English period (1150—1500). OED's earliest evidence for scot is from 1189. scot is probably a variant or alteration of another lexical item.

In Old English, scot first meant to throw or cast away. The meaning of casting away was extended metaphorically to paying or transfering money. From there, it took on the specific meaning of paying a tax to a ruler. The word scot also evolved into our modern word, shot, which retains more of that older definition.
