- Calgary - Alberta. Most filming for the show took place in and around Calgary, a city in the province of Alberta in Western Canada. Calgary stood as a substitute for many areas in The Last of Us.
- Fort Macleod - Alberta. Another town in Alberta, Canada, used for filming The Last of Us was Fort Macleod, located south of Calgary. The Fort Macleod set included police cars from Austin, Texas, as well as changing many storefronts to fit Austin's aesthetic.

Jan 26, 2023 · The beginning of the first episode is set in Austin, the state capital of Texas. However, filming wasn't even done in the US. Instead, two towns in Alberta, Canada were used. These are High River and Fort Macleod, the latter also being the birthplace of Joni Mitchell. Another town, Olds, was used for reshoots for certain shots.
