Apr 10, 2022 · The airline was the first big casaulty of the deregulation era, making headlines around the world when its 71-strong rainbow fleet ceased operations on May 12, 1982. Braniff failed in spectacularly glamourous and stylish beauty (they loaded so much caviar onto Concorde flights that cabin crew would take leftovers home and feed it to their cats).
Delivered on July 2, 1935, to Braniff at what is probably the site of the current Oklahoma City airport. A few years later it was sold to Boston & Maine Airways re registered as NC242. By the late 1940s, "1030" had been sold to Wisconsin Air Central re-registered NC842. "1030" was then sold to Cordova Air Service in Alaska and registered N842 on 6 February 1952.

The United States Post Office granted Braniff an airmail route in 1934, in the wake of the 1934 Air Mail Scandal, thanks to Paul Braniff's effort. In 1935, it was the first airline to fly from Chicago, Illinois to the U.S.-Mexico border. This is probably where its slogan, "From the Great Lakes to the Gulf", originated.
