Gualtieri (Mantovano: Gualtēr) is a comune (municipality) in the province of Reggio Emilia, in the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna, located about 70 kilometres (43 mi) northwest of Bologna and about 25 kilometres (16 mi) north of Reggio Emilia on the right bank of the Po river. Location. Gualtieri is situated north of the province of Reggio Emilia, at a distance of 26 km from the administrative centre. Historical notes. Historians narrate that the name "Gualtieri" appeared for the first time during the Lombard domination as "Castrum Vultureno" which later became "Castrum Walterii", or residence of the Lombard Gualtiero who lived in the 7th century.
