Food City actually dates all the way back to the early 1900’s in Greeneville, Tennessee. However, K-VA-T Food Stores’ was born in the 1950’s. Founder Jack C. Smith, along with his father Curtis, and uncle Earl, opened the first K-VA-T store in Gundy, Virginia. At first glance the grocery business was hard on the Smith family.
